Unchartered Territory

To say that we are in unchartered territory is an understatement.  As we all come to terms with our new normal, we wanted to send out some information to our clients to keep everyone updated.

Beginning Tuesday, March 24th, Kansas City and its surrounding counties (Jackson County, MO, Johnson County, KS, Wyandotte County, KS) are to be on a “stay-at-home” order.  This impacts our physical Cornerstone office location. However, for the past several years, Cornerstone has worked to be up-to-date on technology and all that it offers.   We have embraced online portals, video/tele-conferencing, paperless work environments and working from home for our staff.

It is Cornerstone’s intention to continue working through this “stay-at-home” order.  Please see below for information:


If you have already submitted your information to us for tax preparation, we have your information and it is in queue to be prepared, reviewed, and completed.  Everything has been scanned electronically in our offices and we work with a digital work flow process to make sure returns are continuing to move through our work queues.  We will continue working diligently on your information and will work to complete your return as soon as possible.


If you have not already submitted your information to us, there are a couple of things you can do to get us your information.

  1. Bring your tax information to our offices from 9am - 4pm on Sunday, 3/22/2020, or from 8am – 6pm on Monday, 3/23/2020 and we will get your information logged in, scanned, and into the work queue.

  2. Upload your information to your online portal.  We will log in your return submission as if we received it in paper and it will go in queue accordingly.

  3. Mail in your information.  It seems we will still be able to accept mail.   If you mail in your information, we will log it in, scan it, and place it in queue similar to the other methods.  

  4. FedEx or UPS submissions.  Please send to:

Below are instructions for the portal and if you have any troubles at all, please let us know.

  1. Go to www.cornerstonecpas.com

  2. Click on the “Client Portal Login” button on the home page

  3. Your username is your email address

  4. Enter your password and log on (if you can’t remember your password (or if this is the first time logging in), please select the “Forgot your password” link and follow the screen instructions)

  5. If you need to upload documents, click on the “file exchange” link on the left-hand side, then click on the appropriate folder.  Click on the “upload” button within the folder to add files.

  6. To access your tax returns or client action items, click on the link with your (or your entity’s) name on the left-hand side, then click on Tax Returns>Tax Year.  



As your returns are completed, we will be talking with you via phone/email and will be sending you returns/documents/vouchers electronically and through the portal.  Paper copies of returns will be processed as needed and probably delivered/available for pick up once the “stay-at-home” order has been lifted. We will keep you updated if this process changes.




As you are probably aware, the IRS has changed the deadline to file AND pay to July 15, 2020.   We have not seen any guidance from our local states (Kansas and Missouri), but we would anticipate that they will follow suit.  For our remote clients around the country and the world, we will follow any guidance from those states on filing deadlines, but would anticipate they will follow suit as well.  We will keep you posted.




For our accounting and payroll clients, we will be working in a similar fashion.  We will need to receive your accounting information either through email and/or your portal or through mail.  For those that require checks to be written, we will have access to our check printer and can manage that on a case-by-case basis.  We will be contacting our accounting and payroll clients individually to work out the best process.




Above all else, we want our clients to stay safe and healthy.  We are all in this together and we are doing our part to stop the spread of this virus.  Please know that our thoughts are with all of you and that we are with you in spirit as we navigate through this.
